Motorola Solutions Launches Assist Chat AI to Transform Public Safety Operations

Motorola Solutions has announced a major upgrade to its Assist Chat AI technology, aiming to make critical data more accessible to a wider range of public safety personnel. This new expansion will allow dispatchers, investigators, and other frontline responders to securely connect to vital agency data, case histories, and standard operating procedures while ensuring compliance with FBI and CJIS security standards.

The company is offering public safety agencies a free starter edition of Assist Chat, a cutting-edge AI assistant designed to enhance operational efficiency. Initially available in the United States, Motorola Solutions has plans to roll it out to Australia and New Zealand, regions that already share the US’s P25 digital radio standard, ensuring a smooth integration process.

Mahesh Saptharishi, the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Motorola Solutions, emphasized the groundbreaking nature of this development, stating, "We’re raising the bar on how agencies interact with their data. Assist Chat allows every member of a public safety agency—whether they’re on the front lines or behind the scenes—to securely access and converse with their data. As agencies adopt more of Assist’s capabilities, it will exponentially increase the speed and accuracy of their workflows."

Currently, approximately 3,600 of the 6,000 public safety answering points in the US rely on Motorola Solutions’ emergency command center software, which already integrates Assist. This integration helps automate tasks like call transcription, translation, and non-emergency inquiry handling, all designed to streamline the dispatch process.

Motorola Solutions is expanding Assist’s functionality by incorporating computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and records management software. This development will enable dispatchers to make faster decisions with real-time processing of radio transcripts and location metadata. For instance, if a car crash occurs, the system will automatically generate a dispatch incident and suggest an ambulance response for the affected location.

AI-powered features within records management also enable officers to refine their case narratives, checking for accuracy by cross-referencing sources such as video footage, radio audio, and CAD logs. Investigators and crime analysts can use Assist for more in-depth research, such as creating historical location maps for vehicles involved in ongoing investigations. This integration is particularly valuable in criminal investigations, where speed and data accuracy are critical.

JC Meyer, the Manager of Technology Services at the Department of Public Safety in Lee County, Florida, highlighted the positive impact of Assist on emergency response times: "Assist streamlines our operations and reduces the stress on our team. By automating routine tasks and simplifying complex processes, we gain more time and capacity to assist people in need during critical moments."

Mahesh Saptharishi further elaborated on the importance of AI, saying, "AI isn’t just an add-on—it’s the foundation of our public safety software. Think of Assist as the central nervous system of our products. It proactively supports users with context-specific information, customized to their role, task, location, and time of day. As agencies consolidate their data into a single secure environment, Assist grows more intelligent, offering increasingly accurate and actionable suggestions."

Assist Chat serves as a conversational interface across Motorola Solutions' suite of public safety applications. It leverages large language models to securely access an agency's knowledge base, ensuring that all data remains within the agency’s controlled environment. Agencies retain full ownership and control of their data, with no information being shared between different agencies.

Through Assist Chat, users can perform voice or text queries across various workflows, including dispatch, records, evidence, and historical case information, all within a secure platform. Beyond supporting emergency response and investigative tasks, Assist can also analyze internal policies, identifying areas for improvement or recommending updates based on frequent queries or industry trends.

Mahesh Saptharishi concluded, "The critical information first responders need is often buried beneath mountains of data. Assist Chat bridges the gap, transforming raw information into easily accessible and actionable insights."
