Apple’s Patent for a Foldable Apple Watch: A New Era of Wearables?

The idea of a foldable iPhone has long been rumored, but Apple may have an even more ambitious plan in the works. Recent reports suggest that the tech giant is exploring a foldable Apple Watch, which could potentially replace the need for carrying a smartphone altogether. This innovative concept, revealed through a newly published patent application, could signal a dramatic shift in wearable technology.

Filed in 2023, Apple’s patent application, which was recently made public by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), shows a foldable Apple Watch with a flip-up display. While it’s packed with advanced features, the design raises eyebrows—it resembles a toyish Walkie-Talkie watch or a miniature version of Samsung's Z Flip attached to a wristband. Despite the unpolished look, the potential functionality is intriguing.

The foldable Apple Watch, as described in the patent, would operate like the current Apple Watch, offering basic features such as time, weather, and health data. However, the real innovation comes when the watch opens to reveal a second, larger display. This expanded screen would allow users to browse the web, play games, or consume media, much like a smartphone. Apple also envisions a dynamic display that could rotate or move in various ways, adding versatility to the device. Additionally, the watch would feature two cameras: one facing outward for photos and video calls, and another facing inward for selfies or communication with others.

According to the patent, the idea behind this foldable design is to help users leave their smartphones behind, particularly during exercise or recreational activities. Apple recognizes that many people already use smartwatches as a substitute for their phones in such situations, but current devices are limited in terms of screen size and functionality. With this foldable Apple Watch, the goal is to offer an all-in-one wearable that provides more capabilities while maintaining the convenience of a compact form.

While the concept is undoubtedly appealing, it’s important to remember that Apple files numerous patents every year—often to prevent competitors from developing similar ideas. Since Samsung introduced its first foldable phone in 2019, the tech world has speculated about when Apple would join the foldable phone trend. However, Apple has yet to release a foldable device, despite patenting concepts for foldable iPads, MacBooks, and now, the Apple Watch. Whether or not a foldable Apple Watch will ever become a reality remains to be seen.

In the meantime, the wearable world is still abuzz with Apple’s current offerings, with many eager to see how the brand will continue to innovate in the smartwatch space.
