Oxfordshire Drivers Urged to Plan Ahead as A34 Faces Holiday Traffic Surge

Oxford and the surrounding areas are bracing for one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, with experts advising drivers to think carefully before hitting the road. The A34, a key dual carriageway running from Oxford to Newbury, has been highlighted as a “congestion hotspot” by the AA, particularly as people head out for Christmas celebrations.

With festive festivities, family visits, and last-minute shopping all combining to create a surge in traffic, motorists are urged to plan their journeys carefully and allow for extra time. The AA predicts significant delays on this route, which stretches through some of Oxfordshire's busiest areas, including Abingdon, Bicester, and Didcot.

Recent incidents along the A34 have already raised concerns. Just this past Thursday, a Ministry of Defence lorry was involved in a four-vehicle collision on the northbound stretch near East Ilsley at approximately 7:15 a.m. The crash left one driver in serious condition, currently receiving treatment at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

The AA has warned that, with millions of journeys expected across the UK, roads are likely to be clogged for the entire festive period. An AA spokesperson noted, "With such a high volume of journeys forecasted, the roads are set for a yuletide jam that even Santa’s sleigh might struggle to dodge."

Adding to the risks, Thames Valley Police has also cautioned drivers about the dangers of drink-driving, as Christmas parties ramp up across the region. As part of their ongoing Operation Limit campaign, which targets drink and drug driving, a police spokeswoman emphasized the importance of responsible driving: “We have a zero-tolerance approach to drink and drug driving. Please don’t drink and drive, allow extra time for your journeys, and drive sensibly to keep yourself and others safe.”

This holiday season, over 66 million trips are expected to take place on UK roads, prompting the AA to issue an amber traffic warning. Shaun Jones, an expert patrol for the AA, shared some practical advice: “Our advice is simple: plan ahead, check your route, and allow extra time.”

The A34, often one of the busiest routes in Oxfordshire, will see particularly heavy traffic as it serves as a key passageway for those traveling to the south or Midlands. With such a high volume of holiday traffic, Jones suggested that patience is the best gift this Christmas. “Pack essentials, keep your tank or EV charge topped up, and don’t let congestion steal your Christmas sparkle,” he said.

Research by car dealer Motorpoint has revealed that over 11% of motorists have witnessed a crash during the festive period. Tim Rodie, resident driving expert at Motorpoint, advises that drivers should prioritize their mental state before heading out on the road. “Before getting behind the wheel, make sure you don’t feel distracted, tired, or stressed. Heightened emotions can affect your reaction times, so it's best to feel calm and relaxed before driving.”
