Idaho’s first responders are truly exceptional, often going above and beyond to protect their communities. In a remarkable collaboration, Patch and T-Mobile are shining a spotlight on these everyday heroes—EMTs, firefighters, and police officers—who make an extraordinary impact on Idahoans’ lives.

Here are five standout first responders from Idaho who exemplify courage, dedication, and professionalism:

William "Wild Bill" Yensen (Caldwell) – A Legacy of Bravery
In April, the Wildland Firefighter Foundation awarded 91-year-old William "Wild Bill" Yensen with the prestigious Black Mountain Award, honoring his incredible career as a smokejumper. Over the span of three decades, Yensen completed an impressive 333 missions, parachuting into some of the most remote areas to battle wildfires. His career, which began in 1953, saw him continue to fight fires long past typical retirement age, driven by his relentless passion and physical stamina. This ceremony highlighted not only his dedication but also the often-overlooked courage of wildland firefighters. Yensen’s life-saving work protected vast wilderness areas across nearly every western state.

Corporal Travis Gurney (American Falls) – A Life Saved by Quick Thinking
In January 2024, Corporal Travis Gurney of the Idaho State Police performed an extraordinary act of bravery on Interstate 86 near American Falls. When a wrong-way driver engaged in a high-speed pursuit, Gurney risked his life to end the chase, deliberately striking the suspect’s vehicle head-on with his patrol car. His swift and decisive action prevented a potentially devastating collision. Gurney’s heroic efforts earned him recognition as a finalist for the 2024 IACP/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year Award, an honor given to officers who demonstrate exceptional courage, leadership, and professionalism.

Officer Mitch Bierma (Idaho Falls) – Courage Under Fire
In December 2023, Officer Mitch Bierma of the Idaho Falls Police Department responded to a perilous situation at a hotel parking lot. When a suspect opened fire on an Idaho State Police trooper, Bierma arrived just in time. Despite being shot at, he pursued the gunman with remarkable bravery, ultimately helping end the threat. His quick thinking and composure under fire earned him the Valor Award from the Greater Idaho Falls Police Foundation. His actions not only stopped a dangerous criminal but also demonstrated the true essence of law enforcement courage.

Officer Eli Kistemann (Idaho Falls) – A Tireless Protector
March saw Officer Eli Kistemann of the Idaho Falls Police Department named MVP by the Greater Idaho Falls Police Foundation. A standout in proactive policing, Kistemann’s efforts resulted in 24 arrests in just one month—June. His dedication has significantly disrupted local drug activity and made Idaho Falls a safer place for its residents. His work is a testament to his commitment to reducing crime and keeping the community safe, with his impressive record of arrests making him a well-deserved award recipient.

Sheriff’s Deputy Stan Denham (Grangeville) – A Lifesaver in the Wilderness
Idaho County Sheriff’s Deputy Stan Denham’s skills were recognized with the 2023 Veterans of Foreign Wars National Law Enforcement Award. His most notable work came when he played a crucial role in locating a missing child and suspect in a noncustodial parental abduction case in Idaho’s rugged backcountry. Denham meticulously tracked the duo through subtle clues like broken branches and flattened grass. His expert search-and-rescue capabilities have saved many lives in Idaho’s wilderness, and his humility and professionalism were celebrated at the award ceremony, surrounded by his family, colleagues, and community.
