Over the past year, more than two-thirds of rural retailers have fallen victim to retail crime, according to a recent report by the National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society (NFU Mutual).
The study, which analyzed data from 500 retail decision-makers, reveals that 67% of rural shops faced some form of crime in the 12 months leading up to March 2025. Shockingly, more than half of those affected experienced multiple incidents, with many retailers suffering from over three crimes during this period. The findings paint a troubling picture for those operating in rural areas, where the challenges of security and crime prevention are growing increasingly complex.
Among the surveyed retailers, over half (53%) have taken proactive steps to protect themselves, implementing various security measures in response to the rising crime rates. NFU Mutual, which operates as a mutual insurer owned by its policyholders, also discovered that nearly three-quarters (73%) of rural shops feel that crime has increased over the last year, adding to the sense of vulnerability felt by many small business owners in the countryside.
Zoe Knight, Head of Commercial at NFU Mutual, expressed concern over the growing trend: “Our research highlights the increasing number of rural retailers becoming victims of crime. We urge farm shop owners to remain vigilant and take measures to safeguard their stock, staff, and premises. Businesses are taking significant steps to enhance security, using both technological solutions and physical security measures to protect themselves.”
She emphasized that rural locations, often remote and less patrolled, make farm shops prime targets for criminals. Knight strongly encouraged business owners to adopt preventive strategies to deter thieves, noting that simple actions, such as engaging with customers, could serve as an effective deterrent. "Greeting customers when they enter the shop can help. It makes it clear they’ve been noticed, and the risk of theft may decrease as thieves realize they’ve been identified."
The report also offers detailed advice for rural retailers on how to bolster their security. NFU Mutual recommends that businesses invest in surveillance systems that offer high-quality images, cloud-based storage, and links to mobile devices or remote monitoring systems. Furthermore, it stresses the importance of compliance with GDPR to ensure the technology meets legal requirements.
In addition to physical security, the study highlights the growing concern of cyber threats targeting rural shops. The report urges retailers to secure their digital assets by investing in cyber insurance and consulting with data protection experts to maintain the ongoing security of their information systems.
The rising wave of crime in rural areas has created a pressing need for shop owners to adapt quickly, embracing new technologies and methods to safeguard their businesses. While the risks may be high, NFU Mutual's research serves as a vital reminder for farm shop owners to remain proactive and vigilant in protecting their livelihoods.
