Lancashire Constabulary, renowned as one of the UK's most digitally advanced police forces, has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its frontline policing operations with the integration of Motorola Solutions technology. This strategic move is set to enhance both efficiency and community engagement, empowering officers to spend more time on the streets and less time on administrative tasks.
Historically, police officers in the UK have been burdened with the outdated practice of relying on paper notepads and returning to police stations to file reports and evidence. This time-consuming process often meant officers spent less time engaging with their communities. However, the tides of policing are changing, as more forces are embracing technology to streamline their operations and allow officers to focus on what matters most: serving the public.
At the forefront of this technological revolution is Lancashire Constabulary’s decision to extend its contract for the Pronto digital policing app, ensuring its use until 2029. With over 3,500 frontline officers and staff now equipped with the app, the force has reported significant improvements in time management, with officers spending hundreds more hours on the streets. The Pronto app enables officers to access records, file reports, and record evidence from any location, eliminating the need for trips back to the station. It even allows officers to use voice commands, so they can access information and file reports while on the move, all without taking their eyes off the road—a vital feature for ensuring safety during vehicle patrols.
Lancashire Constabulary was one of the first forces in the world to adopt the Pronto system, and it has since expanded its investment by purchasing 1,750 body cameras to further enhance evidence collection. These cameras not only provide critical visual evidence but also offer officers increased protection by recording interactions in real time. The body cameras are being upgraded to the Motorola Solutions V500 devices, which include live-streaming capabilities, allowing control rooms to view incidents as they unfold. Additionally, the M500 in-car video systems have been rolled out across the entire fleet of Lancashire police vehicles, creating a fully integrated ecosystem of real-time video and data management.
Both the V500 and M500 devices are seamlessly integrated with the Pronto app, which is supported by VideoManager—Motorola’s evidence management software. This software ensures that all collected data is securely handled, stored, and shared in compliance with operational standards. Additionally, Lancashire Constabulary continues to rely on the Airwave mission-critical voice communications system to maintain secure and efficient communication between officers and control rooms.
Chief Superintendent Chris Hardy of Lancashire Constabulary emphasized the force’s commitment to embracing innovation as a means of enhancing its service to the community. "By investing in technology like Pronto and body cameras, we’re enabling our teams to work more safely and effectively," Hardy said. "With data integrity at the core of our systems, we’re reducing operational challenges such as duplicate records, and our goal is to channel all data collection through Pronto, further modernizing our approach to policing to keep our communities safe."
Fergus Mayne, the UK and Ireland country manager at Motorola Solutions, praised Lancashire’s digital transformation, noting, “Real-time video is revolutionizing the way police forces gather information, respond to incidents, and create records with rich, objective evidence. Lancashire’s digital journey has been impressive, setting a new standard for forces across the country, connecting the frontline with control rooms and ensuring more efficient and effective policing.”
Through this ongoing technological evolution, Lancashire Constabulary is not just modernizing its processes, but is also setting a high bar for other police forces across the UK, showing the world how digital tools can be leveraged to enhance safety, efficiency, and community engagement.
